Old Town: Barcino, Roman Historical walking Route:
- Look at the route
- Children friendly: Grade 1/5
Hey there, history buffs and curious explorers! Let’s take a delightful stroll through the ancient Roman tale of Barcino (that’s the Roman name for Barcelona). Sure, Barcelona is known for its fantastic restaurants, captivating shows, and intriguing museums, but let’s not forget the cool history vibes that add to its charm. Barcino came into being during the reign of Emperor Augustus, over 2000 springs ago. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of Roman control, the arrival of the Visigoths, the influence of the Arabs, and even the reign of the Carolingian Franks. All these historical layers have shaped Barcelona into the vibrant metropolis it is today.
Hold on, future-seekers! While it’s exciting to look forward, let’s not lose sight of where we come from. Fortunately, a piece of Barcino’s Roman history is still alive and well, and you won’t believe how accessible it is – right in the heart of the city!
Here’s the scoop on 5 awesome spots that allow you to touch Roman history like a true explorer. Ready for a captivating journey through time? Welcome to Barcino!
Stop 1. Roman Funerary Way (Plaza de Madrid):
Imagine this: you’re right in the middle of the city, specifically Plaza de Madrid. And there, under the open sky, you’ll find the Roman Funerary Way. It’s right there to admire from the street! Nowadays, it’s lovingly preserved by the Museum of the History of Barcelona (MUHBA). Way back between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, Romans were not allowed to bury their dead within the city walls. So, Barcino’s final resting places were established outside those walls. What used to be a peaceful spot to show respect to ancestors is now near the Decathlon store in the Ciutat Vella. Despite the hustle and bustle of today, back in the day, this spot was reserved for the middle and lower classes. Discovered by chance in 1954, the tombs from the 2nd and 3rd centuries are in such excellent condition that you can still read the inscriptions on them.
What: Roman Funerary Way | Where: Plaza de Madrid | Opening hours: Tuesday-Friday: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Sunday: 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM | Price: Free entry all day on the first Sunday of every month and every day from 3:00 PM (Museum starting from 1.5€). +Info: Here
Stop 2. Porta Praetoria (Portal del Bisbe):
This is like the only survivor from the Roman wall’s crew – the Porta Praetoria, also known as the Portal del Bisbe. It was basically the VIP entrance to Barcino via Decumanus Maximus (one of the main streets). You’ll spot it on Carrer del Bisbe, and guess what? One of the side passages is still standing strong! Don’t forget to check out the aqueduct reconstruction on the left. Despite a bit of renovation work over the years, this gate still proudly declares, «Hey, the Romans once walked here!»
What: Porta Praetoria | Where: Carrer del Bisbe with Plaça Nova | Price: Free entry.
Stop 3. Temple of Augustus (Carrer del Paradís, 10):
Picture this: a long time ago, there was a fancy temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus (yup, they worshiped the big shots in ancient Rome). It used to sit grandly atop Mount Tàber, the highest point of old Barcino, standing tall at 19.6 meters. Fast forward to the 21st century, and you can catch a glimpse of its remains within the premises of the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya. Originally adorned with more than thirty columns, only four remain standing today. Nevertheless, it’s still an impressive sight. To visit it, simply enter through a doorway and discover a hidden gem right in the heart of the Ciutat Vella!
What: Temple of Augustus | Where: Carrer del Paradís, 10 | Opening hours: Monday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM | Price: Free entry all day on the first Sunday of each month and every day from 3:00 PM.
Stop 4. Archaeological Remains under Plaça del Rey (MUHBA):
Fancy exploring a labyrinth of ancient Roman buildings tucked beneath the bustling streets of the Ciutat Vella? Head over to Plaça del Rey and let the Museum of the History of Barcelona guide you through the roots of Barcino. Walk where ancient feet once trod – in Paleochristian churches, salted fish factories, dyer workshops, and even winemaking facilities (you might need a dash of imagination for the full effect!).
What: MUHBA Subsoil | Where: Plaza del Rey with Carrer del Veguer | Opening hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Sunday: 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM | Price Starting from 5€.
Stop 5. Remnants of the Barcino Wall:
While strolling along Carrer del Regomir, be sure to take a moment to admire the remnants of the coastal wall of Barcino. These almost 2000-year-old rocks blend harmoniously with the modern buildings of the Ciutat Vella. It’s a true fusion of the past and present in one spot. And don’t miss the chance to explore the archaeological remains of ancient port-side baths adjacent to the former Porta Decumana (or Sea Gate) near Pati Llimona. To cap off your adventure, venture to Pati Amagat – a quiet and hidden oasis in the middle of the modern world. Here, you can admire the intricate details of this segment of the Barcino wall. Will you be able to spot the inscriptions?
What: Coastal Wall of Barcino | Where: Carrer del Regomir, Pati Llimona, and Pati Amagat | Opening Hours: (Puerta del Mar) Tuesday-Friday 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Saturday 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM | Price: Free entry.
Ready for a journey with divine grace? Check this out: On Carrer de Regomir, within ancient Roman walls, find a chapel honoring St. Christopher for 500 years. He’s the protector of travelers. On July 10th, a priest blesses vehicles and gifts lavender flowers to travelers.
Now it’s time to plan your immersive journey through history! This list has got you covered for an incredible time exploring the Ciutat Vella. Get ready to soak up the Barcino vibe! 🕶️🏛️ (¡By the way, “Ciutat Vella” means Old Town in Catalan!)

Stay Informed
Barcelona is a beautiful and lively city, renowned as one of the most visited places in the world. While it is generally a safe destination, the high volume of tourists can attract pickpockets and opportunistic thieves, particularly in popular tourist areas.
To ensure a pleasant stay, we recommend our guests take the following precautions with their belongings:
Out of tricks:
1. Pickpocketing and Bag Snatching:
- How it works: Pickpockets often work in crowded areas like Las Ramblas, Sagrada Familia, and the metro. They may create distractions such as arguments or accidental bumps to take your belongings.
- How to avoid: Keep valuables in a secure, zipped bag. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use anti-theft bags and keep them in front of you. Be cautious of distractions and stay vigilant in crowded places.
2. Fake Police Officers:
- How it works: Scammers posing as police officers may ask to see your passport or wallet to check for counterfeit money. They then steal your money or documents.
- How to avoid: Always ask for identification. Real police officers will usually not ask to check your money. If in doubt, offer to go with them to the nearest police station.
3. Restaurant and Bar Scams:
- How it works: Some establishments may overcharge tourists or add hidden fees to the bill.
- How to avoid: Check reviews before choosing a place to eat. Always ask for a menu with prices and check your bill carefully before paying.
4. Street Games (Shell Game):
- How it works: The shell game involves a ball and three cups, where participants bet money on which cup the ball is under. It’s rigged and you will lose.
- How to avoid: Do not engage with street game operators. Walk away if you see these games being played.
5. Friendship Bracelet Scam:
- How it works: Someone may approach you and offer a “free” friendship bracelet. Once it’s on your wrist, they will demand money.
- How to avoid: Politely but firmly refuse any unsolicited offers. Keep your hands to yourself and walk away.
4. ATM Scams:
- How it works: Scammers may install skimmers on ATMs to steal card information, or they may distract you while a partner steals your cash or card.
- How to avoid: Use ATMs inside banks whenever possible. Cover your PIN when entering it and stay alert.
5. Fake Tickets and Tours:
- How it works: Fraudsters sell fake tickets to popular attractions or offer bogus tours.
- How to avoid: Purchase tickets from official sources, either directly at the venue or through reputable websites. Avoid buying tickets from street vendors.
6. Gypsy Flower Scam:
- How it works: An elderly woman offers you a sprig of rosemary, claiming it’s for good luck. She will then ask for money or pickpocket you.
- How to avoid: Politely decline any unsolicited offers and keep moving.
7. Spilled Liquid Distraction:
- How it works: Someone spills a liquid on you “accidentally” and offers to help clean it up, while an accomplice steals your belongings.
- How to avoid: Be cautious if someone spills something on you and check your belongings immediately.
8. Metro Scams:
- How it works: Scammers use various tactics, such as blocking turnstiles, to distract and pickpocket you on the metro.
- How to avoid: Stay aware of your surroundings. Hold your bags and belongings securely, especially when entering or exiting the metro.
9. Taxi-Meter Ticket Scam:
- How it works: Taxi drivers might overcharge you by adding unnecessary fees or refusing to give you a receipt. They might claim charges for bags or other non-existent fees.
- How to avoid: Always ask for the taxi-meter ticket to check for any unusual charges. The only legitimate extra charges are for airport exit (€4.30) and for more than four passengers in the car. This ticket is also crucial for identifying the taxi if you leave something behind.
Safety recommendations or wise tips:
Do not display large amounts of cash; carry only as much as you need.
You will be able to pay by card in most of the places.
Keep an eye on your personal belongings, we recommend using bags with long straps and wearing them crossbody, with the bag in the front.
Be vigilant in tourist spots, crowds, restaurants, and on public transportation. The pickpocket waits for a distraction to take what is yours.
When walking around the city, know how to get to your destination in
advance so you appear confident in where you are going. Avoid walking around with your phone in your hand.
Emergency telephone line: 112 (Assistance in more than 50 languages).
With a bit of common sense and awareness, you can easily avoid any issues. Barcelona is a very safe city in terms of personal safety, so you can relax and enjoy all the wonderful experiences it has to offer.
